Te Kōhanga Reo o Ngā Whānau Whānui
A warm, culturally grounded space where tamariki can grow, explore, and connect to their whakapapa. Te Kōhanga Reo o Ngā Whānau Whānui approached us to refresh their spaces with a mix of purpose-built learning environments, visual storytelling, and comfortable play areas that reflect the unique values of their whānau.
Design Approach
Our design brief focused on three key priorities:
-
Create calm, safe, and intuitive spaces for pēpi, toddlers, and older tamariki to explore independently.
-
Weave te ao Māori into the environment through natural materials, imagery, and layout.
-
Maximise open floor area while adding function and flow to learning zones.
Working collaboratively with the kaiako, we developed a layout plan that included dedicated areas for sleep, quiet play, active learning, and shared whānau spaces—designed to support the routines of the kōhanga while showcasing local identity.
What We Delivered
Play’n’Learn delivered a comprehensive fit-out featuring in-house manufactured plywood furniture and play equipment, including custom curved shelving and nooks to support flexible zoning. The sleep room was equipped with mobile cot units and modular access ramps to promote independence and ease of movement. Visual storytelling was woven throughout the environment using scenic vinyls and cultural motifs, complemented by dedicated teacher resource storage and display shelving. The overall aesthetic was grounded in a neutral, calming palette, enhanced by soft furnishings and cushions that introduce gentle pops of colour.
Key Features
- Whānau Nook & Circular Pou Table
- A central feature of the space is the welcoming black mat area, framed by a custom wharenui-style nook and low pou table. Soft cushions invite tamariki to sit together for shared storytelling and restful play.
- Curved Storage & Zoning
- Our signature curved shelving and bench units help define play zones without disrupting the open-plan feel. Green upholstered seats add comfort and tie in with the kōhanga’s natural theme.
- Large Custom Shelving with Visual Panels
- We worked closely with the team to design large corner shelving units that feature local landscapes and woven textures. These pieces act as both functional storage and identity pieces for the space.
- Sleep Room Fit-Out
- For pēpi, we installed a full suite of mobile cots with lockable castors and durable mattress bases. A modular access ramp system supports gross motor skill development and independence for infants.
